Edinburg, From Chapin to College Town

The town began as Chapin, a community founded in 1908 that soon became the county seat. In 1911 it took the name Edinburg, honoring the Scottish birthplace of early settler John Young. The Museum of South Texas History on North Closner Boulevard is built around the 1910 county jail and opened in 1970.

Edinburg is also a college town. The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley was established in 2013 and enrolls 28,584 students. Its roots here go back to 1927, when the junior college that became UT Pan American opened.

The median value of an owner-occupied home is $189,600, and just 53.3% of homes are owner-occupied (Census ACS, 2020–2024), so rental owners make up a good share of requests. No source counts Edinburg roof types; your roofer will confirm yours.

What Edinburg Homeowners Ask

Who issues roofing permits in Edinburg?

Building Safety, at 415 W. University Drive. Call (956) 388-8203 to confirm what your re-roof needs. Your roofer should pull the permit and show the city $10,000 liability coverage or a surety bond.

My rental near UTRGV has an old roof. Repair or replace?

It depends on age, leaks and storm history. Soft decking or repeat leaks usually make patching a losing game. A free inspection gives you a written answer, and the quiz above offers a first read.

Was Edinburg hit by the 2012 hailstorm?

Yes. NWS said the March 29, 2012 storms raked the McAllen, Edinburg and Mission area with very large hail. Any roof installed before then is worth a look.

Will the roofer argue my claim with the insurer?

No. Under Texas insurance law, whoever might do your roofing can't also adjust your claim. Your roofer can document the damage and write a price. You and your insurer, or a public adjuster you hire, settle the claim.
