Replacing a Roof in Weslaco

Weslaco's name is spelled out from the W. E. Stewart Land Company, which bought 30,000 acres here in December 1917. The townsite was platted on September 18, 1919. The 2020 Census counted 40,160 people, and the July 2025 estimate is 44,203, so the city keeps adding homes.

Because Weslaco sits at the edge of our area, tell us your street when you call. If no roofer we work with covers it, we'll say so plainly instead of sending someone who won't show.

Weslaco's Housing at a Glance

Roofs vary house to house, and the inspection tells you the material, age and deck condition.

Roof Services in Weslaco

  • Full roof replacement. Tear-off, a deck check and the new roof system are all listed in one written bid.
  • Storm and hail damage. Your roofer records the damage and writes up the repair cost. Filing and settling the claim stay with you and your insurer.
  • Metal roof replacement. Metal costs more per square foot. Ask for a side-by-side bid so you can weigh it against shingles.
  • Shingle roof replacement. Asphalt keeps the cost down. Class 4 shingles are an upgrade you choose, not a Weslaco rule.
  • Roof repair. New flashing or a patch of shingles can sometimes buy years.

Storms That Reached Weslaco Rooftops

National Weather Service records put Weslaco in the path of three damaging storms since 2015.

The April 24, 2015 microburst brought winds of 65 to 80 mph to colonias around Weslaco and Donna, destroying at least two dozen homes. During Hurricane Hanna in July 2020, the Weslaco Midvalley station logged a 59 mph peak gust and 6.53 inches of rain, with trees and power poles knocked over and streets under one to two feet of water.

Then, just before 1 a.m. on April 29, 2023, a squall line drove 75 to 80 mph winds over Weslaco, and the NWS survey found shingle damage to homes.

None of this means your roof has a problem, only that a look is worth booking.

Weslaco Permits and the Building Division

The City of Weslaco's Building Permit and Inspections Division handles permits; reach it at 956-973-3123. We haven't read official wording on whether a re-roof needs a permit, so ask your roofer whether they plan to pull one and confirm with the division before the tear-off starts. For homes outside city limits, ask Hidalgo County Planning, (956) 318-2840, what applies.

There's no Weslaco-only price survey, so the table uses state and McAllen-area sources.

What Weslaco Homeowners Ask

Is Weslaco too far out for your service?

It's the farthest town we cover, at the east end of the area. We send each request to one independent local roofer who works this part of Hidalgo County. If nobody can reach your address, we'll tell you rather than leave you waiting on a call that never comes.

Who do I call about a roofing permit in Weslaco?

Call the Building Permit and Inspections Division at 956-973-3123 before work begins. We haven't confirmed the city's rule on re-roofs, so let the division tell you what your job needs. Your roofer should be the one to pull any permit.

Will the roofer handle my insurance claim?

No. Texas law bars a contractor from acting as a public adjuster on a home it's working on. Your roofer can inspect, photograph and price the damage. You and your insurance company are the ones who negotiate and settle the claim from there.

Do I need Class 4 shingles in Weslaco?

No city in our area requires them. They're an optional upgrade that handles hail better, and many Texas insurers give a premium discount for them. The amount varies by company, so ask your insurer before you choose, and have the roofer fill out form PC068.
