After the Storm Passes

Ask neighbors about their worst roof weather and many name wind before hail. Overnight on April 28–29, 2023, a line of storms pushed 75–85 mph winds from McAllen to Progreso and lifted roofs off a number of buildings. The National Weather Service put damage at $50–100 million and called it worse than Hurricane Hanna.

Hanna struck on July 25, 2020, with McAllen-area gusts near 60 mph and 8–13 inches of rain; NWS said hundreds of poorly built homes were damaged, mostly their roofs. On May 8, 2025, an 80–85 mph microburst hit north McAllen near the Edinburg line and partly lifted shingles on several homes.

Hail has its own record. On March 29, 2012, stones up to baseball size fell for over half an hour across north McAllen, Edinburg and Mission. Insured losses hit $260 million on about 2,800 homeowner claims, ranking 21st costliest in Texas since 1950. Hail over 2 inches returned to the Mission and McAllen area on April 21, 2023.

Where Storm Damage Replacement Fits

  • Shingles that flapped loose. A strong gust can break a shingle's seal without tearing it away. Up close, crease lines give it away.
  • Round bruises and bare spots. Hail tends to knock granules off in circles and can crack shingles or dent vents and gutters.
  • Stains after heavy rain. A new ceiling spot often traces back to flashing or a lifted edge.

Rough Numbers for Storm Damage Replacement

On an approved claim, the insurer covers the damage and you pay the deductible (Insurance Code §707.002). Either way, the roof is priced on these ranges.

What Happens on the Day

  1. Stay off the roof. Photograph what you can see from the yard and write down the storm's date.
  2. Free inspection. The roofer checks shingles, flashing, vents and gutters and photographs what they find.
  3. Findings in writing. You get damage notes plus an itemized price for the repair or the full roof.
  4. You open the claim. Send your insurer the photos and notes, then meet its adjuster.
  5. Work begins after approval. The permit is pulled, then tear-off and the new roof follow.

What You Get Up Front

After a big wind, strangers with clipboards show up fast. The roofer we connect you with is local and independent; ask for proof of liability insurance, a local address and references. If you sign at your door, a home-solicitation sale of $25 or more can be cancelled until midnight of the third business day.

What Your Insurer Will Ask For

Expect questions about the storm date, photos and the cost to fix the damage. Your roofer can supply photos and a price. Under Insurance Code §4102.163, though, a contractor can't act as a public adjuster on a home it is or may be working on. So the roofer documents and prices the damage, and you and your insurance company settle the claim.

Be wary of any offer to waive, rebate or absorb your deductible. Under Business and Commerce Code §27.02, doing that or even advertising it without your insurer's consent is a Class B misdemeanor. A roofing contract of $1,000 or more expected to be paid by insurance must carry a bold notice that you, the insured, pay the deductible. And §707.004 lets your insurer hold back depreciation until it sees proof you paid.

Frequently Asked

Should I call my insurer or a roofer first?

Either order works. Many owners book a free inspection first to learn whether there's damage worth claiming. If there is, you open the claim and share the roofer's photos. Check your policy for any deadline on reporting storm damage.

Can the roofer be there when the adjuster comes?

Many homeowners ask for that, so the documented damage is easy to find. The roofer can point out what they saw, but agreeing on the amount stays between you and your insurance company.

Does hail always mean a new roof?

No. Small hail may leave nothing behind, or only dent a vent. Whether a slope needs patching or replacing depends on how widespread the bruising is, and a written report gives you and your adjuster specifics.

Is a Class 4 roof worth it after hail?

It's optional; nothing in our service area requires one. Many Texas insurers discount premiums for a Class 4 impact-resistant roof, each setting its own amount. Your roofer fills out TDI form PC068 so you can ask about it.
